Steve is the named principal of The Oberman Law Firm practicing primarily in East Tennessee.  Since 1980, Steve has defended thousands of clients charged with crimes ranging from speeding tickets to murder.  However, Steve's focus is defending those accused of driving under the influence (DUI) and related offenses.  To meet the diverse legal needs of his clients, Steve associates with lawyers who excel in their respective area of law, such as personal injury, wrongful death, and worker's compensation cases.

Steve has been a member of the Board of Regents of the National College for DUI Defense (NCDD) since 1999 and began his term as Dean of the College in July 2009.  He was also the first lawyer in Tennessee to be certified as a DUI Defense Specialist by the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization and the NCDD.

He is the author of DUI: The Crime & Consequences in Tennessee and co-author of the national treatise, Drunk Driving Defense. He has been chair or co-chair of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' DUI Committee since 1995 and is a frequent contributor to its official publication, The Champion.

Steve has been an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee Law School since 1993 and has received a number of prestigious awards for his faculty contributions. He is a popular speaker at seminars throughout the United States and has even spoken to court officials in Cambridge, England about defending impaired drivers. In 2002, Steve was honored to demonstrate cross-examination techniques and lecture at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico, Virginia on the topic of courtroom testimony. In 2006, he was appointed to the Governor's Task Force on DUI Laws in Tennessee.

Steve has been named to Tennessee's Best Lawyers List annually since the inception of the list in 2004. It has described him as: "[the] Godfather statewide in the area of DUI"; "Brilliant lawyer, great teacher"; and "Well-regarded trial attorney with 'professorial' demeanor. . . .".  He has also been honored as one of the "Best Lawyers in America" by the publication of the same name; a "Top 100 Trial Lawyer" by the American Trial Lawyers Association; and a "Super Lawyer" by Mid-South Super Lawyers magazine.

He has achieved the top designations by the two leading national lawyer rating systems, Martindale-Hubbell and AVVO.com.  Steve has been a featured guest on many local and national radio and television programs, where he has provided commentary on criminal defense issues ranging from the O.J. Simpson murder trial to, of course, DUI defense.

Steve enjoys hosting "Let's Talk Law," which combines his love for radio announcing (his last regular show was in 1977) and his passion for teaching.  It is his hope that through his show the listeners will learn about the fields of law that affect their lives on a regular basis.

Sara Compher-Rice regularly joins Steve as co-host of "Let's Talk Law."  Sara graduated magna cum laude from the University of Tennessee College of Law in 2002, and was also elected to the Order of the Coif (an honorary scholastic society recognizing those graduating in the top 10% of their law school class).  Since her graduation, Sara has practiced with Steve focusing her practice on criminal defense, with an emphasis on DUI defense.  She is a member of the National College for DUI Defense and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, where she serves as Vice-Chair of the DUI Committee.   Sara is a frequent lecturer in her own right, having taught lawyers in seminars from Pennsylvania to Nevada about various aspects of criminal defense.  In addition to teaching and publishing articles on a variety of topics relating to DUI Defense, Sara also assists Steve in the research and writing of both of his legal texts.
